negative control
This is a MOS2 observation with almost no obvious flare, used to test whether the GTI screening metrics manufacture "improvement" when no real SP improvement exists.

2.filter support, using the same strategy definitions and a 3B background/RMF detector-space source-PHA screen. ESAS 4.background was not re-run per candidate, so the result only answers "whether the metric stays near zero on a stable observation".Range -7.26% to +10.42%.
Range -6.73% to +1.07%.
Range -2.90% to +0.52%.
Three metrics side by side
The three figures use the same x-axis: GTI retention relative to 2.filter. The first is the old metric R=(C_{2.filter}-C_{strategy})/C_{2.filter}; the second is Al line/continuum; the third is Q=R(1.4–1.8)/[R(1.0–1.4)+R(1.8–3.2)]. In a control sample with no real flare, the latter two should stay around 0 with error bars covering 0.

Why this control matters
The 0201 trace retains about 99.1% within the 2.filter support; the 51-s rate selected by standard 2.filter has mean about 2.188 c/s and standard deviation about 0.201 c/s. Compared with 0101's about 68.7% support and about 0.303 c/s fluctuation, this is indeed a closer-to-stable test. If a metric steadily produces positive gain here, it can no longer be interpreted as SP removal; only if it rises on a high-fluctuation observation like 0101 while holding at 0 on 0201 does it satisfy the "flare-dependent" necessary condition.
The Si line here instead exposes a protection boundary:Aggressive quantile subsets can show a Si ratio of about −16.9±7.0% (about −2.42σ), so Si cannot serve as the primary optimization axis; it can only serve as a cross-diagnostic that "rejects a candidate when an anomaly appears". The Al primary metric and broadband Q have no corresponding significant positive gain on the same candidate, which is exactly the negative-control behaviour we need.

Values for the 66 candidates
A negative line-contrast gain is not definite evidence of a "reverse SP flare"; it first shows that the candidate obtained no positive improvement on the stable control sample. Only when a result repeats across multiple observations, exceeds error, is consistent with both the Al and broadband projections, and passes matched 4.background and XSherpa residual/released-sky gates can SP be discussed.
